Summer of the Hornets is loosely based on an actual family trauma when Holly Andres' sister suffered more than a hundred hornet stings. In the series, two sisters can't resist the temptation to poke a hornet's nest in the woods near their their home. One suffers the painful, dangerous consequences, and the family home is literally tinted in the signature yellow of the hornet's markings. The characters in the series are portrayed by Andres' sister and her family.
