As the youngest of ten children, Holly Andres grew up navigating a complex social order, both reflecting and deflecting the identities of her siblings as she slowly developed her own sense of selfhood. The characters in Stories from a Short Street are loosely based on the artist's own brothers and sisters; each image presents a particular moment, an essential activity, a tense interaction from which a distilled psychological portrait of the central figure emerges.
