  • CERAMIC BIRDS

    by Cathy Weber

    MORE INFO

  • I have been making hundreds of ceramic birds each year for the last ten years. What has evolved from this process is a formal expression of the “bird” concept that is not species-specific but archetypal. As objects, birds serve as metaphors for a wide range of human needs and emotions: aspiration and serenity, nesting and flight, fragility and freedom, community and solitude.

We read desire in wishbones, rebirth in eggs, and nostalgia in birdsong. Each of my ceramic birds is a glazed surface inviting individual interpretation and meditation.

    STANDS

Radius Gallery carries an assortment of stands made by the artist from driftwood she collects near her home in Montana. Some stands are made to attach to a wall, others to rest on a tabletop. Some hold only one bird while others hold two, three or four. Each stand is unique and carefully designed to capture the bird's peaceful perch.

Prices range from $18 to $40. To find the best pairing for your bird(s), please contact the gallery at info@radiusgallery.com.

Some collectors opt to create their own perches. All of Cathy Weber's ceramic birds—except for the flying variety—come with a metal support dowel that can be easily set in a 1/4" hole.

    INSTALLATIONS

A wonderful aspect of Cathy Weber’s ceramic birds is that they can be grouped to create dramatic and delightful custom installations. The artist will collaborate with you to design a custom “flock” for your living space, indoors or out.

If you live far away, Cathy can help conceptualize the perfect installation based on photographs of your space, and can guide you through the hanging process. If you live nearby, she can visit your home, help formulate a vision, and even install the work.

The design fee for custom installations starts at $100. A moderate increase may be required depending on the number and variety of birds and branches.

  • Cathy Weber grew up in the Midwestern U.S., studied at the Herron School of Art and Indiana University, and completed a formal painting apprenticeship in Mexico City. In 1981 she moved to Montana, where she maintains a studio in historic downtown Dillon. Though most of Weber’s work is done in oil, she is skilled in a variety of media. Her work is motivated by an increasing sense of urgency to make things of beauty in response to war, injustice, greed and violence. Weber finds comfort and hope in the process of creating beautiful images of common objects.
